Background

The global water cycle is an integral part of the Earth system. It plays a central role in global atmospheric circulations, controlling the global energy cycle (through the release of latent heat) as well as the carbon, nutrient and sediment cycles. The FreshNor project is a co-ordinated effort within the Nordic countries to improve the understanding and description of the hydrological cycle in the Nordic Seas, in climate change model simulations for the Arctic region, and for the Nordic countries in climate change scenarios. The project is sponsored by the Nordic Council of Ministers' Arctic Cooperation Programme.

The symposium on the Arctic Freshwater Budget is the third and final meeting within the FreshNor project The symposium seeks to bring together leading scientists working with all aspects of the freshwater cycle to discuss current state-of-art and open questions related to freshwater fluxes in the Arctic.

Nuuk Climate Days 2009

The international FreshNor symposium is part of the 2009 "Nuuk Climate Days" and held in parallel with the international workshop on Changes in the Greenland Cryosphere (CGC), organised by the Danish National Space Institute, Technical University of Denmark, and a third workshop focusing on the ecological and societal impacts of climate change in Greenland, organised by the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources.

The Nuuk Climate Days 2009 are timed with the establishment of a new climate centre in Greenland, hosted by the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources. The event will be open to all interested in Nuuk and will take place in the main theatre room of the Katuaq Culture Centre, with seating of up to 500 persons.
